32 ft is the last “normal” indoor size for many GCs
Most Utah warehouses that are not true high-bay industrial never need 40 ft of platform. A 32 ft with an extension deck reaches lights, bus duct, and HVAC that look intimidating from the floor. If the superintendent has not measured, start by measuring — not by ordering the tallest scissor on the rate sheet.
What 40 ft is actually for
High industrial bays, some distribution centers, and indoor construction where steel is in the 40s. Working height lands around 46 ft. These machines are wide (often ~47 in), heavy, and unhappy in small freight elevators. They are still scissors: no outreach. If you are painting a wall 15 ft in front of the machine, you wanted a boom.
Electric RT 40 ft vs slab 40 ft
We also rent 40 ft rough-terrain electric scissors (~69 in wide) for pads that are not finished. That is a different machine than a slab SJ4740. Do not mix them up on the PO. Dirt pad = RT. Warehouse aisle = slab.
Who should rent which
Rent 32 ft for high-bay interiors you have measured into the mid-30s working height. Rent 40 ft only when the work is truly up there and the floor and aisles allow it. Call (801) 880-8800 before you assume 40 ft is the safe default.
FAQ
Can a 40 ft scissor replace a 40 ft boom?
Only for straight-up work on a level slab. Any horizontal reach still needs a boom.
Why is the 40 ft so much heavier?
More structure, larger batteries or RT drivetrain, and a bigger deck. Ask us for wheel-load data before you roll onto a mezzanine or elevated slab.
Do you rent 40 ft rough-terrain scissors?
Yes — the 69-inch RT electric class for outdoor pads. That is not the machine for a finished warehouse aisle.
