Articulating booms bend. Telescopic booms (stick booms) shoot in a straight line. That single difference decides whether you can work over a parapet from the parking lot or whether you need a clear shot at the work from farther away. Height class is the second question, not the first.

Articulating (knuckle) booms
Machines like a 45–46 ft articulating with jib, a 63 ft articulating, or a Genie Z-80/60 exist to reach up and over. Rooftop units, theater grids, industrial mezzanines, and trees are classic jobs. You can park closer to the building and still get the basket to a point that is not in a straight line from the turret. You give up some maximum outreach compared with a stick of similar height.
Telescopic (stick) booms
A 40 ft, 45 ft, or 60–66 ft telescopic boom is the faster machine when you can set up with a clear path — tilt-wall, steel, stadium lighting, long facades. Stick booms typically win on horizontal reach at a given height. They do not “knuckle” over a roof edge. If the only parking is on the far side of a canopy, you wanted articulating.
Jibs and range charts
A jib is extra wrist at the end of the boom. It is not free: capacity can drop and the range chart still rules. If your work is 40 ft up and 30 ft out, do not rent a 45 ft articulating and hope. Bring the numbers; we will check the chart for the class we send.

FAQ
Is a Z-80/60 a telescopic boom?
No. The Genie Z-80/60 is an articulating boom in the 80 ft class. Stick booms in our fleet are the S-40/S-45/S-65 and Skyjack “T” classes.
Do I still need a harness on both?
Yes. Boom lifts require a harness and lanyard to the manufacturer’s anchor, articulating or telescopic.
Can I put a glazier kit on either?
If the machine and capacity allow it. Glass is a capacity and wind problem — tell us the pane weight.
