Dump Trailer vs Tilt-Deck Trailer: Which to Rent

Compare dump trailers (6×12 and 7×14 class) with 24 ft tilt-deck equipment trailers. Debris vs hauling machines, payload, and what a dump cannot load.

A dump trailer (6×12 7,000 lb class or 7×14 14,000 lb class) is for dirt, demo, and gravel you want to unload in 30 seconds. A 24 ft 15,000 lb tilt-deck is for rolling a machine on and off. Using a dump as an equipment trailer is how ramps bend. Using a tilt-deck as a dirt hauler is how you spend all afternoon with a shovel.

Figures below are typical ranges for this equipment class — not a spec sheet for one serial-numbered unit. Used rental inventory rotates; we confirm height, capacity, width, and weight on your quote.

Dump trailers for material

Landscape spoils, roofing tear-off, and gravel runs. Payload is the spec — a 7×14 with 9,500 lb payload is a different tool than a 6×12. Wet Utah clay is heavier than you think; volume is not weight. If you overload, that is your axle and your ticket, not the trailer’s personality.

Tilt-decks for machines

Scissor lifts, compact loaders, and other roll-on equipment want a tilt deck (or our delivery truck). Ground-level Airtow-style decks exist for cargo that should not climb a steep ramp. Match the machine’s weight and width to the trailer, then match the truck.

Tow vehicle

A 14,000 lb dump is not a Camry project. Hitch class, brakes, and payload in the truck bed all count. If you cannot tow it legally, we deliver the machine instead and you skip the trailer rental.

Who should rent which

Dump for bulk material. Tilt-deck for equipment. Call (801) 880-8800 with payload and what you are hauling.

FAQ

Can I load a skid steer in a dump trailer?

Some people try. We would rather you rent the tilt-deck or take our delivery. Ramps and dump sides are a bad equipment dock.

What is the Airtow for?

Ground-level utility loading — cargo that should not climb a steep ramp. Different from both dump and tilt-deck.

Do I need electric brakes?

At these GVWRs, yes, with a controller that matches. We will not send a 14k dump behind a truck that cannot stop it.

Need a quote on the right class?

Call or text — we'll match height, width, and capacity to the job instead of renting you a bigger machine than you need.
