Backfill is the week the house stops looking like a bunker. The loader places dirt in lifts. The rammer or trench roller densifies against the wall. The mini or CTL then pulls final grade so water leaves the foundation. Dumping the stockpile in one lift and driving over it is how you get settlement cracks and a soggy basement window.

Lifts, not a landslide
Place with a T550-class CTL. Compact each lift with a rammer in cohesive soil or a plate on granular. Long foundation walls like a Wacker RTX/RTD trench roller so people are not in the slot. The excavator bucket is not a compactor.
Keep water away
Final grade should fall away from the wall. A mini or CTL with a grading bucket can pull that slope. French drains and downspout lines are a different guide — do them before you dress the topsoil, not after the sod is down.
What to keep off the wall
Do not run a telehandler or a dump trailer against a fresh foundation. The CTL is already enough machine to scar a damp-proofing job.
FAQ
How soon after the foundation can I backfill?
When the block or concrete has the strength the print calls for and damp-proofing is done. That is a builder question, not a rental question. We can still have the machines there the morning you are allowed.
Plate or rammer against a foundation?
Granular: plate. Cohesive native: rammer. Long, deep: trench roller. See rammer vs plate and trench roller vs plate.
Can I just drive over it with the CTL?
That densifies the top and leaves the lift against the wall empty. It is a famous shortcut. Inspectors and wet basements both find it.
