A remote-control trench roller (Wacker RTSC3 24 or 32 in, RTLx SC3 class) is how you compact a deep, long utility trench without standing in it with a plate. A plate is still right for the last 20 feet of a shallow irrigation line. If the trench is a person-deep storm line for 200 feet, the roller is the machine — and the safer one.

Why remote trench rollers exist
Deep trenches are a cave-in and an atmospheric hazard. Sending a plate and a laborer to the bottom is the old way. A padfoot trench roller kneads cohesive soils and can work in widths plates cannot cover efficiently. Remote control keeps the operator on the bank.
When a plate is still correct
Shallow, short, granular bedding. Service laterals. Patches. A trench roller is clumsy in a 6-foot landscaping trench with a dozen crossings. Match the tool to the length and depth.
24 in vs 32 in drums
We see both 24 in and 32 in trench compactors. Width has to fit the trench with room to steer. Wider is not always better if the excavation is tight on a pipe.

FAQ
Do I still need shoring if I use a remote roller?
Compaction method does not cancel OSHA trench rules. Shore, slope, or shield as required. The roller just keeps you off the bottom.
Can a trench roller replace a ride-on roller on a parking lot?
