Site prep is stripping, cutting, filling, and leaving a pad somebody can actually form. The production tool is a compact track loader. The shaping tool is a mini excavator. The silent killer is compaction you skipped because the pad “looked flat.” A telehandler on day one is in the way.

PrimaryBobcat T550 class is the house-lot default. Wheeled S550 class only if the pad is already hard and dry.
Strip, spread, and carry without destroying the lot you still have to finish.
Skip it when you are only digging a handful of footing pits on an already-graded lot.

Typical pairing
CTL + mini excavator + 7×14 dump trailer is the site-prep package. Add the roller the afternoon you start placing fill — not the morning the concrete truck is already on the way.
Strip and stockpile
Topsoil comes off and lives somewhere the foundation crew will not bury it. A T550-class CTL with a bucket moves yards; a dump trailer takes it off-site if the lot has no room to stockpile. Do not push topsoil into the street and hope the city does not notice.
Cut, fill, and the Utah surprise
A mini excavator cuts the high corner and digs the obvious holes. If you hit caliche or cobble, the 305.5 class beats a 3.5-ton that is just polishing the surface. Import fill wants a loader, not a bucket swinging over the neighbor’s fence.
Leave a pad, not a moonscape
Roll or plate the fill in lifts. The Wacker RD12-class ride-on roller earns it on a full pad; a WP1550 plate is for edges and garage approaches. Then stop. Framing lumber does not belong on an uncompacted fill.
FAQ
Do I need a full-size dozer?
Almost never on a single house lot. A CTL and a mini will cut and spread a residential pad. If you are moving a hillside, that is a different conversation and a different size class than we list for rent.
Tracks or wheels for site prep?
Tracks until the pad is hard. Wheels are faster on a dry, imported base and meaner on a wet lot. See skid steer vs compact track loader.
Can I pull the mini with my truck?
Sometimes, with the right trailer and GVWR. Many crews just have us deliver. A 24 ft tilt-deck is in the trailer collection if you are set up for it.
