What Equipment Do I Need to Compact Driveway Base?

Driveway base wants a roller in the field and a plate at the garage and the edges. A jumping jack is for clay in a hole, not for 3/4-minus. The concrete hub talks about pour day; this page is the density the truck is about to sit on. If you can see the rock move under the drum, you are not done.

Lifts you can actually densify

Thick dumps feel efficient and stay loose in the middle. Place with a CTL, compact, then the next lift. We rent the Wacker RD12A-class vibratory roller for the field and the WP1550 plate for the edges the roller cannot kiss.

Moisture

Utah base can be dust or soup. Dust will not lock. Soup will pump. If it is pumping, stop and fix moisture — more passes will not invent physics.

Proof

A proof-roll with the CTL is a start, not a nuclear density test. If the print asks for a test, rent the machine that can pass it, then call the tester. We are not the lab.
