A vibratory plate (Wacker WP1550 class) is for patches, trenches, and small granular areas. A roller (walk-behind or RD12A-class ride-on) is for production: driveways, parking lots, and thicker lifts. Using a plate on a 4,000 sq ft pad is how you spend three extra days. Using a roller in a 12-inch-wide trench is how you do not compact the pipe zone at all.

Figures below are typical ranges for this equipment class — not a spec sheet for one serial-numbered unit. Used rental inventory rotates; we confirm height, capacity, width, and weight on your quote.
Plates for small, granular, confined
Sand, gravel, and crushed rock in sidewalks, patio bases, and the bottom of a trench (with the right plate). They turn in a closet. They do not knead clay. If the geotech said cohesive soil, a plate is often the wrong physics.
Rollers for area and asphalt
Smooth-drum vibratory rollers cover ground. Ride-on class machines like a Wacker RD12A 36 in are how you finish a small parking lot without walking 10,000 plate passes. Asphalt wants a roller, not a plate, except for tiny cuts.
Match the lift thickness
No compaction tool fixes 18-inch lifts of junk fill. Thin lifts, right machine, enough passes. We would rather you rent the roller and place 8-inch lifts than rent a plate and pray.
Who should rent which
Plate for patches and trenches. Roller for area. Call (801) 880-8800 with square footage and soil type.
FAQ
What about a jumping jack?
Rammers are for cohesive soils in confined spaces. See rammer vs plate.
Do you rent plates or only sell them?
We have a compaction rental collection and Wacker plates in stock. Call for the rental versus sale mix this week.
Will a plate compact clay?
Poorly. Clay wants impact (rammer) or kneading (padfoot), not a light vibratory plate.
