What Equipment Do I Need to Dig Foundation Footings?

Mini excavator size, spoils handling, and compaction for residential footings and stem walls in Utah soils — including frost-depth holes.

Footings are a trench that has to match a print, not a ditch that looks about right. In Utah that usually means frost-depth perimeter, isolated pads, and soil that turns to concrete two feet down. An E35 with a digging bucket and a dump plan will beat a skid-steer trencher attachment that cannot square a corner.

Size the excavator to the soil, not the brochure

E35-class (with thumb) is plenty for most house laterals and light footings if the ground is friendly. CAT 305.5 class is the machine people wish they had started with once they hit cemented gravel. A walk-behind Barreto is the wrong geometry for a footing trench that has to turn and step.

Spoils cannot live in the hole

A CTL or dump trailer keeps the bank clean so the former can actually work. Swinging spoils onto the future driveway is how you compact the wrong pile and then pay to move it twice.

Compact the right thing

The footing trench itself is not a plate-compactor hobby. Disturbed soil under the footing and the backfill against the stem wall is. Rammers (Wacker BS62 class) like cohesive native. Plates like granular bedding. Inspectors can tell which one you skipped.

FAQ

How deep do house footings go in Utah?

Whatever the print and the local frost depth say — often around 30 inches to the bottom of footing, sometimes more. We size the machine to reach and break ground, not to interpret code. Ask your engineer.

Can a skid steer dig footings?

It can scratch a trench. It cannot square corners or work against a stem wall the way a mini can. Save the loader for spoils and backfill.

Do I need shoring?

Residential footing trenches are often shallow enough to be a different conversation than a sewer main. Still: if people are in a hole that can collapse, that is not our rental list. We do not rent shields.
