What Equipment Do I Need to Install a Culvert?

Mini excavators, compaction, and dump trailers for a driveway or ditch culvert in Utah — bedding, cover, and what not to crush with a loader.

A culvert is a pipe that has to keep a shape under a driveway. That means a mini for the trench, bedding, and a compaction tool that will not oval the pipe. A CTL backfills in lifts. Driving across an uncompacted cover with the same CTL is how you own a crushed pipe and a pond. Size the pipe from the drainage, not from what fit in the pickup.

Trench and invert

Slope like you mean it. E35 for small driveway culverts; 305.5 for longer or deeper. A Barreto is the wrong shape for a culvert bedding.

Bedding and cover

Granular bedding, compact beside the pipe, then lifts of cover. Plates and rammers beside, not on, the crown until you have enough cover. Follow the pipe manufacturer’s minimum cover before the roller shows up.

Headwalls and ditches

The mini can cut inlets. Concrete headwalls are a small pour. See drainage ditch if the rest of the channel is open.

FAQ

Plastic vs corrugated metal?

Different crush strengths and bedding habits. Follow that spec. We will not pick the pipe for you.

Do I need a permit to cross a ditch?

Often, especially if it is a county barrow pit or a canal. We rent the mini either way. The county still exists.

Can I use a trencher?

A chain makes a slot, not a bedding. Use the excavator.
