An open ditch is not a french drain. You are cutting a swale or a channel that water can see. A mini excavator is the right shape: you can cut a wide, sloped invert. A Barreto gives you a slot that will slough and clog. A CTL can pull a shallow swale across a lawn. Pick based on depth, not on which brochure looked agricultural.

Open channel vs pipe
If you are about to drop pipe in and bury it, that is a trench guide. If it stays open, you want a wide, stable side slope. E35 for yard swales; 305.5 for a real ditch along a lane.
Where the dirt goes
Spoil on the downhill side becomes a dam. Spoil on the uphill side can work as a berm if you mean it. A dump trailer is for when neither side should keep the dirt.
Outlets and culverts
A ditch that dead-ends at the neighbor is a lawsuit. Culverts are their own page. Do not cut through a driveway with a mini and walk away.

Is this the same as a french drain?
No. French drains are buried pipe and stone. This is an open channel. Different hydraulic, different machine shape.
Will you survey the slope?
No. Bring a laser. We deliver the excavator. A ditch with reverse fall is just a long pond.
Irrigation company vs drainage company?
If there is a pipe and a spec, maybe both. An open farm ditch is dirt work. Call 811 either way.
