A full in-ground pool is often a mid-size excavator and trucks, not a mini. What this fleet can honestly do is compact-access digs, spa pits, grading around the deck, and spoils on a tight lot. If the pool contractor already has a 14-ton on the way, you may only need a dump trailer and a CTL for the backyard you still have to live in. Gunite pumps and cranes are not us.
In This Guide
Equipment for installing a pool
Primary machines
Mini excavator (5.5-ton class when you can)
Primary305.5 for the pit if it fits; E35 for trenches and tight gates.
The hole you can actually access, plus plumbing trenches.
Skip it when the pool company is bringing a full-size excavator. Then rent what they are missing — often the trailer or the CTL.
BrowseDump trailer
Primary7×14 as a minimum. Plan many runs.
Spoils. Pools are a hauling project.
Skip it when trucks can sit in the street legally and load directly.
BrowseOptional / nice to have
Compact track loader
OptionalT550 class.
Backyard logistics without destroying the only lawn that will survive.
Skip it when the excavator can load the trailer from the hole.
BrowsePlate compactor
OptionalWP1550 class.
Equipment pad and deck base later.
Skip it when you are still digging. Compaction is a different week.
BrowseTypical pairing
Tight-lot spa or small pool: 305.5 + 7×14 dump ± CTL. Production pool: their excavator, our trailers and compact machines for the edges. 811 before anyone is a hero with a bucket.
The hole vs the yard
305.5 class can cut a spa or a small pool on a tight lot and load a 7×14 all day. A production pool wants a bigger bucket. E35 is for plumbing trenches and the tight side yard, not for emptying 60 yards on a schedule.
Spoils will surprise you
Pool dirt has to leave or it becomes a berm against the fence. Dump trailers until the math says trucks. Do not stockpile on the future deck.
Deck and equipment pad
After the vessel, you are in patio/slab land: plate, maybe a mini for the equipment trench. See pour a patio and trench electrical.
FAQ
Can a mini excavate a full pool?
Slowly, on a tight lot, yes. Economically on a production schedule, usually no. Be honest about yardage before you fall in love with the day rate.
Above-ground pool?
Closer to grade-a-yard plus a pad. You may only need a CTL and a plate. Still 811 if you trench for a heater.
Hot tub instead?
Different page — setting a hot tub is a telehandler/chart problem more than a hole.
Machines on the lot
Live inventory rotates. These are current machines in the related rental collections — not a promise that a specific used unit is still here.
