A 2-inch caliper tree is a shovel. A 4-inch caliper with a 40-inch ball is an E35 with a thumb. The landscaping hub mentions placing rock; this page is the pit, the ball, and the backfill. A loader bucket used as a clamp will crack the ball and the trunk. Augers make a glazed hole in clay that a tree will drown in.

Equipment for planting trees
Primary machines
Optional / nice to have
Dump or utility trailer
OptionalAirtow or 6×12 dump. Do not lay a ball on its side for a long highway run if you can avoid it.
Haul trees, export spoils, import mix if the native is garbage.
Skip it when the nursery is placing them in the yard.
BrowseCompact track loader
OptionalT550 with forks.
Stage boxed trees and move mulch after the pits are dug.
Skip it when the mini can do the whole day.
BrowseTypical pairing
E35 with thumb + trailer for spoils. Add a CTL only if you are staging a row of boxed trees. Never compact the backfill like a footing.
Dig a hole the tree can live in
Wider than the ball, not a death cylinder. Minis feather that. In Utah clay, scarify the sides so the roots can escape. 811 before you discover the fiber line with the bucket.
Place, do not drop
Thumb and chains, slow. A CTL with forks can stage boxed trees. It is still a poor rotation tool compared to a mini. Telehandlers are for a commercial alley of trees you cannot get a mini to.
Backfill is not a compaction contest
Settle with water, not a jumping jack on the root ball. Compact only the surrounding grade that has to shed water away from the trunk flare.
FAQ
Can I use a skid-steer auger for tree pits?
It makes a glazed, undersized hole in clay. Use a mini and a bucket. Save the auger for fence posts.
How close to the house?
Far enough for mature canopy and utilities. That is a landscape architect question. We will not drop a ball on a gas line.
Winter planting in Utah?
Frozen ground fights you. If you must, the 305.5 class is happier than an E35 polishing ice. Watering still matters on freeze-thaw weeks.
Machines on the lot
Live inventory rotates. These are current machines in the related rental collections — not a promise that a specific used unit is still here.
