What Equipment Do I Need to Compact an Asphalt Patch?

Honest asphalt-patch rentals from this fleet: plates and small rollers for base and the mat — we do not rent paving machines or hot-mix plants.

We do not rent asphalt pavers, kettles, or a hot-mix plant. What we can outfit is the cut, the base, and the compaction of a patch: WP1550 plate for small repairs, RD12-class roller when the patch is a real area. If you need a paving crew, hire one. If you are compacting a utility cut or a pothole repair, this is the list.

The cut is half the patch

Square the edges. A breaker or a saw (yours) beats a crater. Compact the base in the hole before the mix shows up. A loose patch is a pothole with extra steps.

Hot mix vs cold patch

Hot mix wants to be compacted while it is still alive. Have the plate or roller on site before the truck, not “on the way.” Cold patch still wants density; it will not magically lock because it came in a bag.

What this is not

A parking-lot overlay, a subdivision street, or a driveway pave from scratch. Those are paving contractors. We will still compact their edges if they ask.

FAQ

Can you pave my driveway?

We can help you compact. We cannot pave. Hire an asphalt contractor for a full pave.

Plate or roller on hot mix?

Small: plate. Large: roller. Edges: plate. Do not wait until the mat is cold and then hope.

Utility cut in a city street?

Follow their spec. Often a trench roller on the backfill and a plate or roller on the patch. Permits and traffic control are yours.
