A french drain is a sloped trench with pipe, stone, and fabric — not a gravel-filled ditch you hope for. If the yard has no outlet, you are buying a sump, not a trencher. An E35 gives you a trench you can shape. A Barreto is faster only when the run is long, straight, and the soil is kind. Compact beside the pipe, not through it.

Equipment for installing a french drain
Primary machines
Mini excavator
PrimaryE35 for most yards; 305.5 if you are going deep or through hardpan.
Shaped trench, fittings, and a floor you can actually slope.
Skip it when the run is long, straight, shallow, and a shovel already proved the soil is friendly — consider the Barreto.
BrowseDump trailer
Primary6×12 or 7×14 depending on length.
Spoils out, drain rock in. French drains are a materials-handling job.
Skip it when the rock truck can chute into the trench and spoils stay on site.
BrowseOptional / nice to have
Barreto walk-behind trencher
Optional24 in walk-behind.
Long laterals in good soil when the geometry is a slot, not a pit.
Skip it when you have turns, trees, or cobble.
BrowsePlate compactor
OptionalWP1550 class.
Cap the trench so it does not become a linear sinkhole.
Skip it when you are leaving it as a rock-filled swale on purpose.
BrowseTypical pairing
E35 + dump trailer is the usual french-drain pair. Barreto only for the long, easy stretch. Fix the outlet before you rent anything — a drain with nowhere to go is a pond.
Slope is the product
You need fall to daylight or to a pit. A mini lets you check depth as you go. A chain trencher gives you a uniform slot that still has to be right. Pull string. Guessing is how you own a swamp at the downhill end.
Against the house vs in the yard
Yard drains are this page. Foundation drains at footing depth are closer to basement work and maybe an engineer. Do not trench against a footing because a YouTube video told you to.
Backfill
Clean stone in the pipe zone, native on top if it will drain, fabric so the clay does not move in. A plate on the native cap; not a trench roller on the pipe.
FAQ
Will a french drain fix a wet basement?
Sometimes the yard, not the footing. Interior or exterior footing drains are a different, more serious job. We can trench a yard drain. We cannot promise a dry basement.
How deep?
Deep enough to intercept the water and still have slope. That is site-specific. Bring a laser or a good string. We will not eyeball a 1% grade from the truck.
811?
Yes. Wet corners of yards are where unmarked lines love to live.
Machines on the lot
Live inventory rotates. These are current machines in the related rental collections — not a promise that a specific used unit is still here.
