A retaining wall fails from water and from a soft base, not from picking the wrong block color. Over about three feet you want a mini excavator for the base trench, a plate for every course of gravel, and a dump trailer for the dirt that used to be the slope. The landscaping hub covers yards; this page is the wall itself.

Equipment for installing a retaining wall
Primary machines
Mini excavator with thumb
PrimaryE35 for gates and typical backyard walls; 305.5 for taller cuts and harder ground.
Cut the base, place rock, and pull the slope back without a full-size excavator.
Skip it when the wall is a two-course garden edge you can shovel in an afternoon.
BrowsePlate compactor
PrimaryWP1550 class. A rammer is for cohesive backfill behind the gravel zone, not for the stone.
Base gravel and every lift of drainage stone behind the block.
Skip it when you are stacking a decorative seat wall on existing concrete.
BrowseDump trailer
Primary7×14 for a real wall; 6×12 for a short run.
Export cut, import wall rock, and keep the yard from becoming the stockpile.
Skip it when the supplier is blowing gravel into the trench and spoils stay on site.
BrowseOptional / nice to have
Typical pairing
E35 + plate + dump trailer is the residential wall package. Add the CTL when block pallets cannot be hand-set from the driveway. Compact every course — not just the base.
The base trench is the job
Width is the block plus drainage space behind. Depth is gravel base plus burying the first course. E35-class minis fit most backyards; 305.5 class helps when you are cutting a real bank or hitting caliche. A skid-steer bucket is a poor trench.
Drainage is not optional
Pipe, clean stone, fabric. The mini places it; the plate densifies it. Skipping the plate because the wall “looks solid” is how it leans in the first wet spring. Walls over local permit height need an engineer — we rent machines, not stamps.
Block handling
Palletized SRW can ride a CTL with forks. Boulders want a mini with a thumb, not a loader bucket used as a clamp. A telehandler is for a commercial wall you cannot get a CTL to.
FAQ
When do I need a permit or an engineer?
Usually when the wall exceeds local height (often four feet measured in a specific way) or holds up a driveway. Ask the city before you rent the mini. We will not be your geotech.
Can I compact with the excavator bucket?
No. That is how you get a pretty-looking wall that moves. Rent the plate.
Boulder wall vs block?
Boulders: mini with thumb, period. Block: mini plus plate plus gravel logistics. Do not mix the methods.
Machines on the lot
Live inventory rotates. These are current machines in the related rental collections — not a promise that a specific used unit is still here.
