What Equipment Do I Need to Install a Sewer Lateral?

A sewer lateral is a gravity problem. The trench has to hold a slope, get wider at the tap, and often go deeper than people expected once they shoot the invert. That is an excavator job. A Barreto is the wrong opening move unless you already know the run is shallow and straight in perfect soil. Compact in lifts on the way out or the next camera inspection will show a belly.

Equipment for installing a sewer lateral

Primary machines

Mini excavator

Primary

E35 for shallow, tight laterals; 305.5 class for depth and hard ground.

The sewer machine — shaped invert, pits, and rock.

Skip it when a plumber is using trenchless and only needs pits at each end — still maybe a mini for those pits.

Typical pairing

305.5 or E35 (from depth and access) + trench roller or rammer + dump trailer. Skip the walk-behind trencher unless a test slot already proved the job is a shallow, straight, friendly cut.

Slope before spoil

Set a laser. The mini feathers the invert. A chain trencher does not correct a hundredth of a foot. If you cannot see the outlet, you are not ready to rent.

Pits

House tie-in and tap at the main are bell holes. Thumbs help with pipe. 305.5 class when the lateral is deep or the soil is cemented. E35 when access is a side yard.
