What Equipment Do I Need to Trench a Water Line?

A water service is a trench that has to stay on grade, miss other utilities, and get compacted. House laterals in friendly soil can be an E35 all afternoon. E35 for pits and any doubtful soil, Barreto only for the easy slot, compaction on the way back in. Typical house lateral: mini + plate or rammer + dump trailer. 811 first.

Depth and frost

Utah services sit below frost. That is often excavator territory, not a 24 in chain hoping for the best. If the cover you need is deeper than the trencher can honestly go, start with the mini. We will not guess your city’s bury depth from the truck.

Bell holes and taps

The trench can be a slot. The tap cannot. Minis dig the pit at the main and at the house. A chain that runs through the only existing water line on the lot is a long day.

Bedding and backfill

Granular bedding likes a plate. Cohesive native likes a rammer. Deep, long services like a Wacker RTX/RTD trench roller so people stay out of the hole. Bucket-compacting is not a method.
