Gas is the trench you do not get to be casual about. Most house services here are an excavator, not a walk-behind chain screaming through an unmarked yard. Hand-expose the existing line. 811 is the start, not a suggestion. We will rent you the mini. We will not talk you into a trencher because it was cheaper if the soil or the proximity is ugly.

Equipment for trenching a gas line
Primary machines
Optional / nice to have
Plate or rammer
OptionalWP1550 plate or BS62 rammer — match the bedding, not your preference.
Only as the gas spec allows for the backfill they named.
Skip it when the utility is backfilling and testing without you.
BrowseDump trailer
Optional6×12 or 7×14.
Spoils off the line so you can see what you are doing.
Skip it when the trench is short and spoils can live well back from the edge.
BrowseTypical pairing
E35 + spoils plan + whatever compaction the utility named. Leave the Barreto at the yard unless the installer specifically asked for a slot in proven-clean soil far from other lines.
Who is allowed to tap
The utility or a licensed installer usually owns the connection. Your trench still has to meet their cover and separation. Ask them before you pick a depth. Our machine does not make you qualified.
Why the mini wins
You can see, you can stop, you can flare a pit. A chain is fast and blind. Fast and blind next to gas is a bad pair. Rocky Utah lots make that worse.
Backfill
Whatever the utility spec says — often screened bedding and careful compaction. A jumping jack dancing on a new service is how you get a leak call. Follow the spec, not a driveway-compaction habit.
FAQ
Can I use a walk-behind trencher for gas?
Only if the installer and the soil both say so. Default here is the mini. We would rather lose a trencher rental than a headline.
What if locates do not show up?
Do not dig. Wait. Guessing is not a rental strategy.
Inside the house to the meter?
That is still a licensed conversation. Outside trench: mini. Inside: not our fleet.
Machines on the lot
Live inventory rotates. These are current machines in the related rental collections — not a promise that a specific used unit is still here.
