Equipment for Utilities and Trenching

Mini excavators, Barreto trenchers, trench rollers, and rammers for water, sewer, power, and drainage work in Utah soils.

Utility work is a trench that has to pass inspection, not a hole that looks about right. Choose the cutting tool (excavator vs trencher) from soil and geometry, then the compaction tool (rammer, plate, trench roller) from the spec. Skipping compaction to “save a rental” is how you dig it twice.

Cut

Excavator for services, fittings, rock, and footings-adjacent work. Walk-behind trencher for long, straight, friendly soil. 3.5-ton vs 5.5-ton from access and ground, not from habit.

Bedding and backfill

Granular bedding likes plates. Cohesive native backfill likes rammers. Long, deep trenches like remote trench rollers so people stay out of the hole.

Spoils

CTL or skid steer to keep the bank clean; dump trailer to leave. An excavator swinging spoils onto the neighbor’s fence is not a material-handling plan.

FAQ

How deep before I need the 5.5-ton?

When the 3.5-ton cannot reach or cannot break the ground. Depth and soil both count. House laterals are often E35 class; mains often are not.

Can I compact with the excavator bucket?

That is not a method. Rent compaction. Inspectors can tell.

Do you rent shoring?

We are an equipment yard, not a trench-safety shop. Plan shoring separately. We will not pretend a mini excavator is a shield.

Need a quote on the right class?

Call or text — we'll match height, width, and capacity to the job instead of renting you a bigger machine than you need.
