Indoor Equipment and Floor-Load Limits

How to rent aerial lifts for upper floors, mezzanines, and parking structures. Wheel loads, 13 ft vs 19 ft scissors, mast lifts, and what to ask the building engineer.

Floor load is why a 32 ft scissor that “would be perfect” never gets off the freight elevator. Concentrated wheel loads, not just GVW, are what slabs and mezzanines care about. If the building has a number, we can try to match a machine. If it does not, somebody is guessing with a 7,000 lb lift.

Get the number

Ask the GC or building engineer for allowable occupancy load and any equipment notes. Parking structures and historic floors fail first. We can provide wheel-load data for the unit we would send. “It looked light” is not data.

Step down in class

13–14 ft scissors and mast lifts (GR-12/GR-20, SJ16) exist for this. A 19 ft is already a different conversation. A 32 or 40 ft slab scissor is often a no on upper floors even if the door fits.

Outriggers and towable booms

Towable booms put load through outrigger pads. That can be worse for a floor than a rolling scissor. Pads spread load; they do not invent capacity.

How to order

Send the floor note and the work height. Call (801) 880-8800. We would rather send a mast lift that is legal than a 26 ft that is not.

FAQ

Is GVW the same as floor load?

No. Two wheels can exceed a slab even when total weight looks fine. Ask for wheel-load data.

Can I use plywood to spread the load?

Sometimes as a supplement, never as a substitute for a rated floor. The engineer still owns the answer.

What about a boom lift indoors?

Heavier, larger footprint, often worse. Indoor booms are a ceiling-and-floor problem, not a default.

Need a quote on the right class?

Call or text — we'll match height, width, and capacity to the job instead of renting you a bigger machine than you need.
