Vertical mast lifts (Genie Runabout GR-12/GR-20, Skyjack SJ16 class) are not tiny scissors. They are a different machine: a small mast, a small platform, and a footprint that survives elevators and data-center aisles that reject even a 32-inch scissor. What a mast lift is good at

Single-operator work in tight interiors: swapping fixtures, pulling cable, inspecting racking, punching access holes. They are light, they turn in a closet, and they are the right answer when a facility manager has already said no to a scissor. Working height on a GR-20 is in the mid-20s — similar in spirit to a 19 ft scissor, with far less deck.

What you give up versus a scissor

Platform size and capacity. You are not drywalling a lobby from a GR-12. You are not staging 10-foot sticks of sprinkler pipe. Mast lifts also feel less stable to new operators because there is no big deck around you — training still matters.

Floor load and finished spaces

This is why building engineers specify mast lifts. Concentrated wheel loads are lower than a 19 or 26 ft scissor. If you are on a raised floor, a mezzanine, or a historic building, ask for the mast lift first and only step up if the task needs the deck.
